The following are general suggestions to help you perform your best on the Graduate Management Admission Test® (GMAT®):

Try to answer all of the questions in each section.

  • Read all test directions carefully. The directions at the beginning of each test section specify the total number of questions in the section and the time allowed for the section. The number of questions answered is incorporated into the calculation of scores. Therefore, it is to your advantage to answer ALL of the questions.
  • Closely monitor your time so that you are able to consider each question carefully.

Maximize your score through effective time management.

  • Use the allotted time wisely. You will be able to do so if you are familiar with the mechanics of the test and the kinds of materials, questions, and directions in the test. Therefore, become familiar with the formats and requirements of each section of the test.
  • Answer as many questions as you can in each section. Frequently check the time remaining to be sure you are making good progress through the test. The amount of time remaining for each section is displayed on the information line at the top of the screen.
  • Work steadily and as rapidly as possible without being careless. On the average, a verbal question takes 1 3/4 minutes and a quantitative question takes about 2 minutes to answer. Give yourself enough time to answer every question. If you do not finish in the allotted time, you will still get a score as long as you have worked on every section.
  • Once you begin a section, section time runs continuously until you leave the section. This is true even if you click on “Time” to hide the time information or click on “Help” to review section directions or review the tutorial.
  • You may want to use the one-minute break between test sections to replenish your supply of scratch paper. After section 2, an on-screen message will tell you a 10-minute break is available. Section timing will not stop if you take an unscheduled break.
  • If a question is too time-consuming or if you do not know the answer, eliminate as many answer choices as possible and then select and confirm the answer you think is best.
  • Similarly, if you are running out of time at the end of the a section and there are still unanswered questions, you should try to quickly review and answer any remaining questions in order to complete the test.

Read each question carefully and thoroughly.

  • Before answering a question, determine exactly what is being asked. The directions explain exactly what is required in order to answer each question type. If you read hastily, you may miss important instructions and seriously jeopardize your scores. To review directions during the test, click on the Help icon.
  • Never skim a question or the possible answers; skimming may cause you to miss important information or nuances. You must answer the question that appears on your screen before moving on to the next question. Once you answer a question and confirm your response, you cannot return to that question.
  • Do not become upset if you have to guess at a question in a multiple-choice section. A person can do very well without answering every question correctly. No one is expected to get a perfect score.
  • Answer each question by clicking on the oval next to your answer choice or by clicking on any part of the text of that answer choice. Complete your answer by clicking on “Next” and then “Answer Confirm.”
  • You can change your answer any time before confirming it by clicking on a different answer choice.

Understand the implications of exiting a section or quitting the test.

  • Once you exit a section, you cannot return to it.
  • Click on the “Test Quit” box at the bottom of your screen only if you decide to end your testing session. If you quit the test, you will not receive a score for any section, even for the sections you have already completed.
  • If you click on “Section Exit” or “Test Quit” by mistake, you will be given the opportunity to reverse or confirm your decision.
  • Current policy states that you may take the CBT once per calendar month. This is true even if you ended your testing session by clicking on “Test Quit” or canceled your scores after completing the test.
